Since 2008, the 24,000 square kilometers (9,300 sq. Miles) of lagoons enclosed by the New Caledonian barrier reef have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for not only there superlative natural beauty, but also to protect the biological diversity and threatened species there.
