With a height of 3,776 meters, the venerated volcanic Mount Fuji is not only Japan's highest and most iconic mountain, but was also regarded as a holy place in Shinto until the Meiji Restoration.

Legend has it that a woodsman named Visu was awoken by a thunderous noise coming from beneath the Earth. He grabbed his family intending to flee and as he left his house he saw that the land near his home had taken the form of a great mountain.
