That’s why this year, we partnered with the Jane Goodall Institute Austria to support their project on the reforestation and preservation of the habitat of the last chimpanzees in Senegal.

The 3-year project, which started in 2021, aims to preserve the habitat of the last chimpanzees in Senegal, implement measures to contain the climate crisis, and promote the resilience of the population.

40,000 seedlings will be grown in tree nurseries, which not only serve to reforest important chimpanzee habitats but are also essential for buffer zones and "living fences". In order to combat bushfires, fire protection zones are also being set up in and around the Dindefelo Community Nature Reserve, and satellite-based fire warnings (Global Forest Watch) are being analysed and documented.

Project goals:

Grow 40,000 seedlings to reforest chimpanzee habitats, create buffer zones outside the DCNR, and plant fruit trees;
Construct “living fences” for cropland to replace “deadwood” fences and thereby reduce deforestation;
Purchase and set up 500 bamboo shelters to protect high-risk trees from roaming wildlife…
