Description

The New Caledonian barrier reef is the second largest of its kind in the world (after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia) and surrounds the French island of Grande Terre with a length of 1,500 kilometers (930 miles). Since 2008, the 24,000 square kilometers (9,300 sq. Miles) of lagoons enclosed by the New Caledonian barrier reef have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for not only there superlative natural beauty, but also to protect the biological diversity and threatened species there.
